As a child, I loved to read and eventually I was signed up for Modern Dance classes so I would get off the couch. Albeit not the rigid structure of Ballet, because I would rather pretend I was a swirling leaf than stand at a barre pumping out plies. From 5th grade to junior high, I was a basketball bum, horse crazy bareback rider turned competitive age-group swimming fish. I biked everywhere. As a high schooler, I began running. During my first track season, shin splints sidelined me into physical therapy. After several agonizing emotionally charged treatments of cross-fiber friction, I found myself asking, “How is invasively tearing up my tissue, healing?” Intuitive logic said to me that what I was experiencing was counterproductive.

I became an elite performer spending a greater amount of time training outdoors and observing nature by pushing my edges in biathlon, duathlon, triathlon, mountaineering and martial arts. I was curious about indigenous healing and less invasive methods to excel and augment restoration. Ultimately, my life experiences have trained me to view the body holographically, vibrating with diverse harmonic quantum particles that create the density of our forms into this reality.

At Humboldt State University, I was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Conference Champion and All-American runner. Intense workouts resulted in extreme leg pain where I could only carefully descend stairs walking backwards. Going to the athletic training room was helpful for supportive tape, but enduring ice baths was intolerable. So, I sought out a massage therapist to assist with my recovery.

Over the course of several sessions, I allowed for adding back, arms, neck and shoulders to focused leg work. A profound sense of relaxation and re-connection to my body enhanced my sense of well-being. My mind and heart opened. I felt called to help others find peace.

Supporting myself through college as a National Park Service Ranger each summer, I was a “Jill” trained for a variety of roles and duties such as federally commissioned law enforcement, wildland fire management, and emergency medical/rescue. However, there was one summer that I skipped the National Park Service and worked instead on a wilderness trail crew for the Siskiyou National Forest and Class III-V whitewater guide on alternate days off just outside the Hupa Reservation on the Trinity and Klamath rivers.

My background also includes coaching highlights of serving on the USA Triathlon Coaching Commission training athletes from age-group beginners to Olympic hopefuls prior to the 2000 Olympic Games. Nowadays, my personal exercise choices are no longer competitively extreme opting instead for reduced cortisol spiking activities. Intrinsic functionally refined movement adds to vitality and resilience rather than take them away. Efficient use of spooled energies is great for healthy longevity. Certified in Yoga instruction (and soon Pilates), my strength, aerobic and restorative focus is on using tools tasked for neurological connection. By mapping sensory-motor movement skills, communication between various parts of the brain and body promote coordination, balance and spatial awareness that enhance athleticism at any age.

I value community, joyful movement and playfulness as an essential part of my daily life along with contemplative practices. I am grateful for the support of family, friends and patients, who have helped to make this practice possible over the years, presently, and in the future. The success of one depends upon the co-creative and collaborative efforts of many.

Be Well,

Wendy
